UC-Davis (FCS) head coach Ron Gould has named Denis Hallin as director of football operations. Hallin was an administrative assistant with the Cal football program from 2004-12. … Former Tennessee Vol and Detroit Lion running back Shawn Bryson will join Matt Rhule’s staff at Temple as a graduate assistant. Bryson spent eight seasons in the NFL with the Lions and Buffalo Bills. … Also at Temple, Shelton Gaffney has been hired as an assistant strength and coordinating coach. Gaffney was Tennessee’s assistant strength and conditioning coach from 2008-10. Most recently, Gaffney has been a strength and conditioning coach at Johnny Long’s Training Academy in Knoxville, Tenn. … Former Boise State linebacker Byron Hout is back with the Broncos as a defensive graduate assistant. He will work work with the linebackers. Hout replaces Andrew Browning, who accepted a full-time assistant coaching position at UTEP this past month. Hout played four years at Boise State (2008-11) and was a starter his junior and senior seasons. He served as a defensive graduate assistant at Washington State last season. Hout is probably best remembered as the player that was punched by Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount following Boise’s 19-8 win over the Ducks in 2009. … The Jacksonville Jaguars have hired Matthew Smiley as assistant special teams coach. Smiley spent 2012 as wide receivers and special teams coach at Charleston Southern (FCS). He worked previously at Eastern Illinois, Eureka College, Dartmouth, Illinois and North Dakota. He will be the third new Jags’ assistant making his NFL debut.
