Maine coach Jack Cosgrove has agreed to a three-year contract extension through June 2016. Cosgrove has coached the Black Bears for 20 seasons and 20th year is the school’s all-time wins leader with 111. His base salary for the contract will be $186,995 a year. Cosgrove has led Maine to four NCAA playoffs, most recently in 2011, and two conference championships. … Bert Watts has been named defensive coordinator at UC-Davis (FCS). Watts, who played at Cal, spent two years under Aggie head coach Ron Gould as the Bears’ defensive GA. Watts spent last season as a coaching assistant for the Denver Broncos, and before that, spent two seasons as defensive technical intern at Colorado. … Davidson (FCS, N.C.) has named former quarterback Paul Nichols as head coach. Nichols was previously the director of player personnel for Tim Beckman at Illinois. Before that, he spent three seasons on Beckman’s staff at Toledo as co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach. At 31, Nichols is the youngest head coach in Division I football, 57 days younger than Western Michigan’s P.J. Fleck. … Chad Creamer will serve as Davidson football’s defensive coordinator, linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator, while D.J. Wingate will be defensive backs coach. Creamer served as a player personnel assistant at Illinois under Nichols last season, while Nichols was Wingate’s position coach when Wingate was a defensive back at Marshall in 2007-08. Prior to joining Nichols at Illinois, Creamer spent two seasons as defensive coordinator at Capital University (D-III, Ohio), and also served as a graduate assistant at Austin Peay and a student assistant at Ohio State. … Mike LaFleur will join Nichols’ staff at Davidson as the offensive coordinator, quarterbacks and wide receivers coach. Nichols will retain Brett Hayford as the team’s defensive line coach. LaFleur comes to Davidson from Saint Joseph’s College (D-II, Ind.) where he served in the same capacity and also as the recruiting coordinator. He joined the Saint Joseph’s staff in 2010 as quarterbacks coach and was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2011. Hayford is entering his 21st season as a Davidson assistant. … Former South Florida linebackers coach Vernon Hargreaves will join Tony Levine’s staff at Houston in the same capacity. A 28-year coaching veteran, Hargreaves spent 13 seasons at his alma mater UConn from 1985-97, and was at Miami (Fla.) from 1998-2005. He spent one season at Florida International and before coaching three seasons each at East Carolina and USF.
