Jackie Shipp, Bruce Kittle fired at Oklahoma
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he bloodletting continues at Oklahoma.
Bob Stoops coached 13 seasons in Norman before he ever fired an assistant. After today, he’s fired four in the last two years.
Defensive line coach Jackie Shipp and tight ends and tackles coach Bruce Kittle are the latest casualties of Stoops’ staff shakeup. Centers and guards coach James Patton was fired on Monday.
Defensive backs coach Willie Martinez was let go last January. Co-offensive coordinators Josh Heupel and Jay Norvell, running backs coach Cale Gundy and defensive ends coach Bobby Jack Wright are the only assistants who remain from the Sooners’ 2011 staff.
The Sooners finished the season 10-3 but ended with an embarrassing 41-13 loss to Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl. A source close to to the situation said that Stoops was not happy with his team’s toughness or physicality on the offensive and defensive lines, and the moves to fire Patton, Shipp and Kittle confirm that.
Shipp was an original member of Stoops’ staff hired in 1999. A standout linebacker at Oklahoma from 1980-83, Shipp was a first-round draft pick of the Miami Dolphins and spent five seasons in the NFL.
Kittle is a former University of Iowa offensive lineman and graduate assistant whose curious path to Norman included time spent as a pastor, lawyer, prison mediator and finally high school assistant coach before a return to coaching as OU’s on-Campus recruiting coordinator in 2010. He became a full-time assistant in 2011.
