Butch Jones: Lane out for 'disciplinary reasons'
No timetable was given for his return, according to Evan Woodberry of the Knoxville News-Sentinel.
Last week, Lane missed practice for what Jones said was a family illness. When he missed missed practice on Thursday, assistant coaches deferred questions to Jones.
Woodberry said that Jones’ announcement today seems to cast doubt on Lane’s future with the team, and that’s bad news for a backfield already short on talent and depth.
Lane was considered the leading candidate to be the Vols’ starting tailback. A junior from Daytona Beach, Fla., he rushed 120 times for 658 yards and caught 29 passes for 228 yards last season.
Senior Rajion Neal now moves into that role. Neal rushed 156 times for 708 yards and five touchdowns in 2012. He caught 19 passes for 149 yard and four TDs.
Alden Hill, a 6-foot-2, 217-pound redshirt freshman, is the next option behind Neal. Hill reportedly played well in last week’s scrimmage.
