N.C. State lands interesting quarterback prospect

[dropcap]Q[/dropcap]uarterback Jalan McClendon of Charlotte (N.C.) West Mecklenburg is North Carolina State’s fifth verbal commitment for 2014.

mcclendonFollowing an unofficial visit to Raleigh over the weekend, McClendon called Wolfpack coach Dave Doeren on Wednesday night to tell him the news.

He’s an important recruit for the Wolfpack on a number of fronts.

McClendon is the Pack third commit from Charlotte — an area Doeren’s staff has clearly made a priority — and fourth from the state of North Carolina.

Despite a 3-star ranking, McClendon had offers from a host of big schools. He chose the Wolfpack over Miami, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida State and Wake Forest, among others.

McClendon’s statistics, while solid, aren’t eye-popping by elite prep quarterback standards. As a junior, he completed 75 of 168 passes for nearly 1,400 yards with 11 touchdowns with seven interceptions.

But McClendon piled up that impressive group of offers because of his high ceiling.

His listed size (6-4, 198) is legitimate and he has plus arm strength.

Though he’s considered a “pro style” quarterback by the ranking services, he’s certainly no statue in the pocket. He’s an above-average athlete who rushed for five touchdowns last season.

With McClendon’s upside potential, it will be interesting to watch his development in offensive coordinator¬†Matt Canada’s quarterback-friendly system.
