Redshirt freshman defensive end leaving North Carolina

williamson[dropcap]N[/dropcap]orth Carolina redshirt freshman Phillip Williamson is leaving the team for academic reasons.

A source tells us that Williamson would not have been eligible to play this fall and will transfer to a junior college.

He signed with the Tar Heels as a 6-foot-3, 210-pound safety/outside linebacker in 2012, but bulked up to 250 pounds while redshirting last year and is now a defensive end.

Williamson went through spring practice at Carolina and registered one tackle in the spring game.

A consensus 3-star prospect out of Jordan High School in Durham, N.C., he registered 162 tackles as a senior and forced 10 fumbles.
