Gray, a rising sophomore from Boyd Anderson High School in Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., announced the decision on his Facebook page — one week after leaving Tennessee.

At Utah State, Gray will be reunited with two of his former Boyd Anderson teammates. Senior Travis Reynolds and sophomore Bruce Natson both play receiver for the Aggies.

“For the next 3 years I will be taking my talents to the university of Utah state,” Gray posted on Wednesday. “God is good and I’m very thankful for him. Never through [sic] I would be playing college ball with my best friend JoJo Natson. Lauderdale better believe ima put on for my city. #NFL2016 draft here I come.”

Gray (5-11, 175) showed promise as a true freshman last season. He played 20 plays in the fourth quarter against South Carolina, and was rewarded with his first start the following week against Troy.

“He’s gifted, you know? Gifts are not the issue,” former Vols cornerbacks coach Derrick Ansley said at the time. “… One thing about Dan, one quality that he has that you have to have as a DB is he don’t really care who he’s going against. He’s very confident in himself, and he has a short memory.”

But Gray struggled in that start, called for pass interference and a personal foul, and beaten for a 51-yard touchdown in man coverage in less than two quarters of play.

He did not start again.

In all, Gray saw action in eight games and totaled six tackles in his only season as a Vol.

Utah State has not confirmed the addition. Because of NCAA transfer rules, he will sit out the 2013 season.

A 3-star recruit by Rivals.com in 2012, Gray originally chose the Vols over Nebraska, Texas Tech, West Virginia and others.
