Tulane receiver contacts Auburn, Troy about transfer

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]ulane wide receiver Wilson Van Hooser will transfer for his senior season to be closer to his ailing mother.

vanhooserHis mother, Joy, has had seven back surgeries and multiple other procedures looking into her brain. She’s been bedridden the past several months.

Van Hooser (6-0, 192) graduated Saturday and will be eligible to play immediately at an FBS school. Tulane coaches contacted Auburn and Troy, both less than an hour drive from from his hometown of Montgomery, Ala., about the possibility of a roster spot.

“I really love Tulane and I love this team, but you have to do what’s necessary sometimes,” Van Hooser told the Baton Rouge Advocate. “I was so impressed with the way the coaches handled it, and I hoped they would be OK with my decision. But I didn’t expect them to sympathize, and they did. These things aren’t easy.”

Auburn could use an experienced wide receiver, but may not be an option. Since the SEC banned the graduate-student transfer exception in 2011, the league only allows transfers with more than one year of eligibility remaining. Schools can request a waiver, but the waivers are generally only granted when the other school has discounted its program.

In three seasons with the Green Wave, Van Hooser caught 55 passes for 805 yards and nine touchdowns. In 2012, he caught just 11 passes, but averaged more than 21 yards per catch. Five of those 11 receptions went for touchdowns.

As a redshirt sophomore in 2011, Van Hooser was second on the team with 36 receptions for 487 yards and four touchdowns.

Van Hooser’s younger brother Walker Van Hooser is a redshirt freshman defensive back and will remain with the Green Wave. Wilson says that a part of him will remain in New Orleans, too.

“I’m doing what needs to be done,” he said. “But I’ll definitely be watching to see what these guys can do, and I want them to win badly.”
