Big Ten, Pac-12 add two California bowl matchups

[dropcap]C[/dropcap]alifornia will soon become the post-season destination for more than just the Big Ten champion.

The league is expected to announce affiliations with San Diego’s Holiday Bowl and the San Francisco-based Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl on Monday.

The new affiliations, which become effective in 2014, will feature a Big Ten vs. Pac-12 matchup, as the Rose Bowl (traditionally, at least).

It looks like the Holiday Bowl will continue to get the Pac-12’s No. 3 team (after the Rose and Alamo), but instead of facing a Big 12 team, they’ll likely face the third best team outside of the Rose. (The Capital One and Outback will get first the Big Ten’s next two teams.)

The Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl is expected to move up in the Pac-12 and get the fourth pick among league teams. (It currently picks sixth.) It is also expected to get the next Big Ten team after Holiday.

The Bowl’s new Pac-12 vs. Big Ten matchup coincides with a move from AT&T Park to the new 49ers stadium in Santa Clara, a combination which should significantly increase its attractiveness in coming years.
