sandbergNow it looks like a second future SEC signal caller will forgo the gridiron for a shot at the big leagues.

Cord Sandberg, a 4-star quarterback from Bradenton (Fla.) Manatee who signed with Mississippi State in February, has agreed to contract terms with the Philadelphia Phillies, who drafted him in the third round with the 89th overall pick.

Sandberg (6-3, 205), an outfielder, said he and the Phillies agreed on a signing bonus of $775,000 plus the equivalent of four years of school at Mississippi State. He has until next month to sign.

“My mindset is I’m going to try to become a major-leaguer,” Sandberg told the Bradenton Herald, just moments after reading his name on MLB.com’s live stream. “I’m just going to go out there and play some baseball.”

Sandberg said the decision to play baseball was made easier being drafted by an organization that has won five straight decision, two pennants and a World Series championship — and has done primarily with talent it acquired through the draft.

“It’s a really good organization,” Sandberg said. “I feel good about going there.

“I’m going to do everything I can to make it as a major-leaguer, and try and prove all the people wrong who didn’t pick me.”

Sandberg’s choice will have a significant impact on Mississippi State’s depth chart.

The Bulldogs also signed Damien Williams (6-1, 215), a 3-rated dual-threat quarterback, from Archbishop Rummel in Metairie, La. in the 2013 class. He will join senior starter Tyler Russell and his backup, sophomore Dak Prescott (6-2, 230), as one of just three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster this fall.

Prescott was impressive in 12 games as a true freshman last season, but he missed spring practice after undergoing surgery to repair a toe injury.
