Penn State: QBs Ferguson, Hackenberg named co-starters
[dropcap]P[/dropcap]enn State coach Bill O’Brien said after spring ball that none of the quarterbacks on campus had separated themselves in the race to replace Matt McGloin. That statement home Thursday when O’Brien released a depth chart listing Tyler Ferguson, a junior college transfer who went through spring practice, and Christian Hackenberg, a 5-star signee that has yet to start classes, as co-starters.
With sophomore Steven Bench transferring to South Florida last month, Ferguson at least has the benefit of time — albeit limited — learning the system.
“We have one quarterback here on campus right now in Tyler Ferguson,” O’Brien said. “That’s the guy that definitely has the lead going into training camp because he’s been here for 15 practices and a lot of meetings.”
But Hackenberg (6-4, 212), Rivals.com’s No. 2 pro-style quarterback, arrives this summer with an impressive resume. Though O’Brien didn’t comment on his new signal caller specifically, he is clearly feeling optimistic.
“We have a very good feeling about our team this summer,” O’Brien said.
