Randy Spetman out as Florida State athletics director

[dropcap]R[/dropcap]andy Spetman is out as Florida State’s athletics director.

spetmanFSU president Eric Barron’s announcement of Spetman’s departure late Wednesday afternoon was abrupt.

According to the Tallahassee Democrat, Spetman was scheduled to present a five-year strategic plan for FSU athletics at Thursday’s Board of Trustees workshop. That item has been removed from the agenda.

Hired in February 2008 by former FSU President T.K. Wetherell, Spetman has been reassigned to an “advisory role” within the athletic department.

He is expected to remain with the university through the end of his contract which expires in in February 2014.

Barron described the decision as “a mutual agreement.”

“I don’t have anything negative to say about Randy Spetman. I have a lot of respect for him,” he said. “We agreed that this is a good time to transition.”

Vanessa Fuchs was named interim athletics director. A national search for Spetman’s replacement will begin immediately.
