[dropcap]W[/dropcap]isconsin’s secondary was already facing the loss of three starters from last season to graduation when projected starting free safety Reggie Mitchell announced that he would transfer to Pitt.

Now, one of the players expected to fill Mitchell’s void will not play for the Badgers.

Donnell Vercher, a safety from Fresno City (Calif.) Community College who signed with Wisconsin in February, has been denied admission to UW and will instead play for Fresno State.

A source told Fresno’s CBS 47 television that Vercher will be eligible to play for the Bulldogs immediately.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Vercher was a 3-star recruit who totaled 23 tackles and eight interceptions as a sophomore. He chose Wisconsin over offers from Fresno State, Oregon State and Syracuse.

The Clovis, Calif. native received interest from UNLV, Oregon State, Fresno State, Boise State and Washington out of high school in 2011 but failed to qualify academically.
