Iowa State's Paul Rhoads fires two assistants

After posting a 3-9 record in his fifth season at Iowa State, it was pretty much a given that some heads on Paul Rhoads’ staff would roll.

Rhoads announced that offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Courtney Messingham and running backs coach Kenith Pope have been let go.

It not surprising that the staff changes came on offense. Iowa State ranked 96th in total offense at 363 yards per game and 91st in scoring offense with just 24.8 points per game.

The Cyclones had to win their last two just to finish 3-9, including a 52-44 win over West Virginia on Saturday.

Both Messingham and Pope were hired by Rhoads in 2009 and have been members of his staff all five years of his tenure in Ames.

“I want to thank both Courtney and Kenith for their service to Iowa State,” Rhoads said in a statement. “They have great character and work ethic, and have been excellent ambassadors for the university and community.

“They worked hard to help elevate our program and have been an important part of the success we have had in this program the last five years.”

Now the search begins for a pair of assistants, and Rhoads himself will enter 2014 positioned firmly on the hot seat.
