Top 16 Contenders For First College Football Playoff

The College Football Playoff begins in earnest in just a matter of months. College football fans are about to experience the first incarnation of what they’ve longed for. Will it work? Only time will tell. But, in the meantime we can have a lot of fun with it.

NFL.com’s Gil Brandt is doing just that with his top 16 contenders for 2014.

Brandt sees Jameis Winston’s Florida State Seminoles and the Bob Stoops led Oklahoma Sooners as the two strongest contenders.

1. Florida State
The Seminoles will have to play 15 games to win the national championship. Very possible with Heisman quarterback and strong offensive line.

2. Oklahoma
The Sooners have five road games, but only one against an opponent with a winning record in 2013. They return their starting QB and have a future star in RB Keith Ford.

Conference breakdown looks like this: SEC-6, PAC 12-4, BIG 12-3, Big 10-2, ACC 1

Gus Malzahn and the Auburn Tigers shocked the football world with their magical 2013 run. For 2014, Brandt has Ole Miss as the nation’s surprise team.
