Iowa: Staff complete; 'Transition period' over

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]owa’s coaching staff is finally complete.

Kirk Ferentz tabbed Chris White as running backs coach and special teams coordinator on Friday, marking the end of a transition period for the Hawkeyes.

Ferentz has now replaced six full-time assistant coaches, including both coordinators, since the 2011 season.

“We’ve been through a period of transition, but we’re enthused about the direction things of things and the group of guys that we have here,” Ferentz said in a press conference.

Iowa added linebackers coach Jim Reid, receivers coach Bobby Kennedy, and promoted graduate assistant DJ Hernandez to tight ends coach earlier this month.

“It happens at other places,” Ferentz said of the turnover. “Bob Stoops comes to mind. I think we’re the only two survivors from our class that are still at the same schools.

“I don’t know if it’s a five-year span or a 10-year span, but at the end of the day, if you look at it over the last 15 years, we’ve probably had less transition than most schools in the same time period.”

White joins the staff after serving the previous four seasons as the Minnesota Vikings’ assistant special teams coach. He previously coached on the collegiate level for 17 years.

White joined the Vikings after a nine-year stint at Syracuse where, at various times, he coached wide receivers, tight ends, special teams and served as recruiting coordinator. His previous full-time college stints included stops at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo (1999), UNLV (1996-98), Holy Cross (1993-94).

The Hawkeyes begin spring practice Wednesday, March 27 and conclude spring drills Saturday, April 27.
