Sources tell Football Rumor Mill that Mullen is a strong candidate to replace the deposed Brady Hoke. But remember, Mullen all but had the Miami job before Al Golden was hired.
[dropcap]R[/dropcap]on West has been hired as North Carolina’s co-defensive coordinator.
West spent the 2012 season in the same position on Todd Graham’s staff at Arizona State.
West coached with Tar Heel defensive coordinator Dan Disch at Illinois in 2010, with West coaching outside linebackers and West coaching inside. West remained at Illinois in 2011 while Disch joined Larry Fedora’s staff at Southern Miss.
West has 16 years of defensive-coaching experience including nine as a coordinator. Prior to Arizona State, West briefly took the job as defensive coordinator at New Mexico before joining Graham’s staff.
In 2009, West coached with Graham at Tulsa, where he served as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.
West spent the majority of his coaching career at Clemson, his alma mater, where he coached 10 seasons. He spent five years as an offensive-line coach. West also coached for two seasons on Tommy Bowden’s staff at Tulane.
[dropcap]N[/dropcap]orth Carolina has officially hired Keith Gilmore as defensive line coach.
Gilmore, who spent the past four seasons at Illinois, replaces Deke Adams, who left last month for South Carolina.
“Keith is a knowledgeable defensive line coach who brings a wealth of experience at the collegiate level to Chapel Hill,” Tar Heel head coach Larry Fedora said. “He has previous experience with our defensive coaches and I believe he is a great fit for us. He does an exceptional job of building relationships and getting the most out of his players.”
A 28-year college coaching veteran, Gilmore has ties with current UNC assistants Vic Koenning and Dan Disch. Gilmore and Koenning worked together during Koenning’s two seasons as the Illini defensive coordinator in 2010-11. Gilmore and Disch were on the Illinois defensive staff in 2009 and 2010.
