A member of the Troy football team has been charged with murder following a shooting that occurred Sunday morning.
Mies was a walk-on linebacker on the Troy football team. The Lafayette, Ga. started seven games in 2012, but was ruled academically ineligible this season. He had been practicing as a member of the Trojans scout team.
Police allege that Miles shot McLendon a little before 8 a.m. local time Sunday morning. McLendon was transported to a local hospital after his body was discovered in an apartment complex, and subsequently died as a result of the gunshot wounds.
“First and foremost, anytime there is a loss of life it is tragic event and our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim and his family,” Troy athletic director John Hartwell said in a statement. “Dimitri Miles was a walk-on student-athlete on our football team who was academically ineligible to compete in competition this past season, but practiced as a member of the scout team. His association with our football team and the Troy Athletic Department has been terminated as a result of these charges which are associated with an incident that occurred off campus.”
As of Monday morning, Miles was being held on a $100,000 bond in the Pike County Jail.
