Martin was defensive coordinator for Brian Kelly at Grand Valley State before becoming head coach. Kelly initially hired him at Notre Dame to work as defensive backs coach in 2010 and 2011 before moving to offense in 2012.

Miami finished 0-12 this season after going 4-8 the previous year.

Miami-Ohio hopes to have new coach hired by season's end

Miami-Ohio didn’t wait until after the season to fire Don Treadwell in hopes of getting a leg up on hiring his replacement.

Don Treadwell was fired after an 0-5 start this season.

Don Treadwell was fired after an 0-5 start this season.

Athletic director David Sayler told earlier this week that he would like to have Treadwell’s replacement in place by the end of the season.

Treadwell was fired after an 0-5 start. He posted an 8-21 record in 2½ seasons. The RedHawks are now 0-7, and end their season Nov. 29 at Ball State.

“What I want to avoid is the thing you run into when you make the change at the end of the year, which is that you’re trying to make this hire in a really compressed week, two-week time frame,” Sayler said. “I want to try to get more out in front, and have this time allow us to do it quicker than that. I’d like to have it done by the end of the season.”

The school is working with the the search firm Collegiate Sports Associates to identify candidates.

Saylor described interest in the job as “overwhelmingly positive” and expects formal interviews to begin soon, an admittedly complicated process during in season.

“That’s going to come down to the candidates’ comfort level with where they are and their relationship to their boss,” he said. “We’re going to do all we can to make it happen that quickly.

“If a candidate is not able to (interview immediately) because of their boss, then that’s a decision we’ll have to make, whether we just move on or wait for that person. That depends on where they are on that list.”
