Bob Stoops coached 13 seasons in Norman before he ever fired an assistant. After today, he’s fired four in the last two years.

Defensive line coach Jackie Shipp and tight ends and tackles coach Bruce Kittle are the latest casualties of Stoops’ staff shakeup. Centers and guards coach James Patton was fired on Monday.

Defensive backs coach Willie Martinez was let go last January. Co-offensive coordinators Josh Heupel and Jay Norvell, running backs coach Cale Gundy and defensive ends coach Bobby Jack Wright are the only assistants who remain from the Sooners’ 2011 staff.

The Sooners finished the season 10-3 but ended with an embarrassing 41-13 loss to Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl. A source close to to the situation said that Stoops was not happy with his team’s toughness or physicality on the offensive and defensive lines, and the moves to fire Patton, Shipp and Kittle confirm that.

Shipp was an original member of Stoops’ staff hired in 1999. A standout linebacker at Oklahoma from 1980-83, Shipp was a first-round draft pick of the Miami Dolphins and spent five seasons in the NFL.

Kittle is a former University of Iowa offensive lineman and graduate assistant whose curious path to Norman included time spent as a pastor, lawyer, prison mediator and finally high school assistant coach before a return to coaching as OU’s on-Campus recruiting coordinator in 2010. He became a full-time assistant in 2011.

Update: Sources tell us that Bill Bedenbaugh has been offered the Oklahoma offensive line job. Though nothing is official, Bedenbaugh is expected to accept.

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]est Virginia offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh is one of two strong candidates to join Oklahoma’s staff, according to a source.

Bedenbaugh would fill the vacancy left by James Patton, who was the Sooners’ centers and guards coach. Patton was apparently told last week to find a new job, and landed yesterday on Kevin Wilson’s staff at Indiana.

Like Tim Kish, who was hired as OU’s linebackers coach last January, Bedenbaugh coached on Mike Stoops‘ staff at Arizona. Bedenbaugh was the Wildcats’ offensive line coach and running game coordinator from 2007-09 and was given the co-offensive coordinator title in 2010.

A very hard-working recruiter, Bedenbaugh was recently named one of 247sports.com’s Top 50 recruiters for 2013.

As a player, Bedenbaugh was a four-year starting lineman for Mike Leach at Iowa Wesleyan. He later coached for Leach at Texas Tech, serving as offensive line graduate assistant from 2000-02, running backs coach in 2003-04, and offensive line coach in 2007-09.

The other name we’ve heard for the Oklahoma position is former Kansas head coach and OU offensive coordinator Mark Mangino.

Mangino was Oklahoma’s offensive line coach in 1999 and also served as the Sooners’ offensive coordinator in 2000-01. He resigned as the Jayhawks’ coach in December 2009.

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]ndiana head coach Kevin Wilson has hired James Patton as recruiting coordinator, special teams coordinator and assistant defensive line coach.

Patton has been an assistant at Oklahoma since 2006, joining the Sooners’ staff when Wilson, then-OU offensive line coach, took over for Chuck Long as offensive coordinator.

Patton and Wilson’s relationship dates back to the early 90s when Patton played wide receiver at Miami (Ohio) and Wilson served as the RedHawks’ offensive line coach. Wilson then served as a graduate assistant under Wilson in 1994-95.

Wilson is excited to have Patton in Bloomington.

“James was one of the toughest players that I’ve ever coached, and he is an enthusiastic, hard-working football coach,” Wilson said in a statement. “He has been in the big time arena, is a Midwest guy and brings some balance to our staff.”

Patton remained in Norman when Wilson left to become the IU head coach after the 2010 season, but he was reassigned to coach guards and centers only. Stoops promoted on-campus recruiting coordinator Bruce Kittle to coach tackles and tight ends at the time.

A source said that Stoops told Patton earlier this week that he needed to find a new job.

Jon Fabris, who coached defensive ends coach and oversaw punt return and block in 2012, will assume the responsibility of defensive line coach with no special teams duties.
