The suspension of Nadir Barnwell (14) puts even more pressure on a thin Rutgers secondary.

True freshman cornerback Nadir Barnwell was suspended indefinitely following a driving while intoxicated and careless driving charge early Sunday, according to an NJ.com report.

Scarlet Knights coach Kyle Flood hasn’t publicly acknowledged the reason for Barnwell’s suspension, except to say it was for violating team rules.

Barnwell, a starter the past four games, will miss Saturday’s game against Temple, and possibly more.

“My plans are for it to be for this week, but it’s not finalized yet,” Flood said.

According to the NJ.com report, Barnwell was charged in his hometown of Piscataway by Rutgers University Police early Sunday morning. No police report was available.

Barnwell’s absence puts an already-depleted Scarlet Knights secondary in an even worse spot. Rutgers lost starting corner Lew Toler was to a season-ending broken arm earlier this year and part-time starter Ian Thomas abruptly quit the team.

Rutgers (4-3, 1-2 AAC) allowed 400 passing yards in a 49-14 homecoming loss to Houston last week. The Scarlet Knights are ranked 121st nationally out of 123 schools in pass defense, allowing 320.1 passing yards per game.

Things don’t get any easier for the Knights this week, as Temple’s P.J. Walker sports a 162.4 QB rating, completing 60.8 percent of his passes for 891 yards, 9 touchdowns and three interceptions this season.
