The job came down to Clawson and Ball State’s Pete Lembo, who met with Wellman in Muncie, Ind. on Thursday.

Before arriving at Bowling Green, Clawson was the head coach at FordhamRichmond and offensive coordinator at Tennessee for one season (2008). Clawson has a 32-31 record with the Falcons, with two previous bowl appearances (2009, 2012) and 18 wins in the last two seasons.

Clawson replaces Jim Grobe, who resigned Dec. 2 after 13 seasons.

He arrived at 9:15 p.m. and a car was delivered to him from Enterprise Rent A Car.

Neither Ball State athletic director Bill Scholl nor Lembo would comment on the matter.

The Wake Forest job came open Monday when Jim Grobe resigned following a 13 seasons.

Wellman said this week that he is looking looking for a replacement with head coaching experience, a record of success and experience at a private institution with higher academic standards. Lembo, who previously coached at Lehigh and Elon, is considered the leading candidate for the job.

Lembo is under contract through 2015, and has a buyout is $396,000.

Grobe earned $2,251,635 last season.
