[dropcap]P[/dropcap]rominent Miami high school coach Telly Lockette will be named running backs coach at South Florida.
He replaces Larry Scott, who left Willie Taggert’s staff to become tight ends coach at the University of Miami earlier this month.
Lockette was a finalist to become the Miami’s running backs coach earlier this month, but former Hurricane player Hurlie Brown was chosen.
The Miami native first rose to prominence in south Florida football as a star running back at Northwestern High. He went on to be a Division I-AA All-American linebacker at Idaho State.
Lockette, who took over at Central in 2008, compiled a 60-11 record on the field. (His record is 47-23 according to the FHSAA, which vacated the Rockets’ 13 wins in 2011 for playing an ineligible player.) In that span, more than 80 Central players have signed football scholarships.
In December, he became the the first coach to take a Miami-Dade team to three consecutive state championship game appearances. The Rockets won two of the last three state titles.
Central Michigan’s Shankweiler named tight ends and tackles coach at FIU
Kort Shankweiler is the new tight ends and tackles coach at FIU. Shankweiler spent the past three seasons as running backs coach and recruiting coordinator at Central Michigan. Before that, he was graduate assistant at Michigan State for two seasons.
Mark Dantonio announces Jim Bollman hire; staff realignment
Michigan State officially announced the hiring of co-offensive coordinator Jim Bollman, and Mark Dantonio laid out his plan for staff realignment.
Bollman, who has 36 years of coaching experience,at the college and pro levels, spent 11 years as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Ohio State. In addition to his co-coordinator role, he will coach the tight ends. Bollman was hired as the offensive line coach at Purdue last month after spending the 2012 season as the offensive line coach and running game coordinator at Boston College.
Dave Warner has been promoted to co-offensive coordinator and will move from quarterbacks coach to running backs. He fills the spot vacated by former offensive coordinator and running backs coach Dan Roushar, who joined New Orleans Saints’ staff earlier this month.
Brad Salem, who coached running backs the past three seasons, will move to quarterbacks coach. He will remain recruiting coordinator.
Defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi has added the assistant head coach title. Narduzzi has been the Spartans’ defensive coordinator the past six seasons. Michigan State led the Big Ten in defense the past two seasons.
The Spartans open spring practice on Tuesday, March 19.
